Job Responsibilities/Duties

Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) seeks a Chemical Engineer to join the Technology Maturation & Analysis group. The Engineer will provide technical and programmatic direction to facilitate the development of innovative technology solutions to tank farm and River Protection Project's (RPP) mission challenges. This position will evaluate, devise, execute and support implementation of new technical and programmatic options that have the potential to improve the effectiveness of and mitigate risks to the overall RPP mission.

This position may involve assignments across multiple aspects of the tank waste mission including waste retrieval, tank inspection, sampling, waste form maturation, filtration, ion exchange, evaporation, vitrification, grout stabilization, and may range from laboratory bench scale to engineering/field scale demonstrations.

The work requires the ability to actively contribute in multi-discipline cross-functional teams to conduct technology maturation activities, analyze and interpret results of testing, and manage product deliverables from technology provider laboratories.

The Engineers responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

* Advise the Department of Energy (DOE) and WRPS senior management on strategies for effectively managing waste at Hanford;

* Coordinate technical and programmatic aspects with multiple internal and external organizations including DOE, Office of River Protection (ORP),Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB), Washington State Department of Ecology, etc;

* Collaborate with technical staff, engineers and/or scientists to help define development and testing activities by subcontracted laboratories, monitor progress, analyze and document results;

* Manage scope, schedule, and budget for subcontracts with national laboratories, contract laboratories, and other technology providers;

* Provide technical and programmatic solutions that enhance the efficiency of the RPP mission;

* Perform technology assessments, evaluations and alternatives analyses;

* Conceive, develop and manage technology development programs that address specific needs and requirements

* Identify, select and manage technology and research providers, e.g. national labs and lab teams;

* Lead and provide technical oversight of subcontractor performance and deliverables;

* Manage technology development programs using EVMS principles to ensure timely delivery of products and value for money;

* Perform in-depth technical reviews of laboratory and technology provider deliverables;

* Participate on task specific issue resolution teams to mitigate mission risk and enhance mission efficiency;

* Support technical issue resolution with external regulatory and stakeholder organizations;

* Provide technical input to engineering evaluation studies that support RPP mission objectives; and

* Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

* Bachelor's Degree (BS) in Chemical Engineering or a related technical degree (Materials Science/Engineering, Nuclear Engineering); and

* Five (5) years of related experience.

Desired Qualifications

* Experience in radiochemical processing preferred.

* Advanced degree or experience/understanding of scientific and applied research preferred.

* Experience in technology evaluations, cost/benefit studies, risk management, or flow sheet development.
